Brushing the silken mane of the painted pony, mind roaming through lands unseen, she hummed. Humming was only one of the things that kept her calm in times of stress. She, like many other Hobbits, like things to be predictable. Routine, no surprises, something comfortable and normal was all she asked for in her life of forty-three years. Primula was a normal, average hobbit, albeit few inches smaller then what was seen as normal, but plain and content as can be.
She wasn't a special hobbit, if anything, she blended into the crowd to the point of becoming virtually invisible, a feat hobbits are easy to achieve yet not when it comes to the eyes of their own. Like a single seed of rice being dropped into pot of other seeds, one could not find her once she didn't wish to be seen. But, the only one who had been able to pick her out of the crowd with ease was her cousin Bilbo Baggins. Not because she allowed him to see her, but because he knew her well.
Since she was young he knew, he knew she didn't like the spotlight. She didn't like anyone looking at her for advice, leadership, anything that didn't happen to do with being known as the quiet one that wanted nothing more then to follow and do her jobs unnoticed. Especially now seeing as her mother began to invite strapping, young hobbit men of age to their hobbit hole in hopes of her daughter getting married and pursuing a simple, comfy, predictable life of a housewife. But she would always disappear, making the men give up and find a new flame.
Even if she always said she wanted comfort and a predictable life, Bilbo new far from it. For as long as he had been her cousin, he knew she wanted adventure. For anything and everything she did that made the others uncomfortable, he took the blame, and over time she stopped and hid in her shell of invisibility. He took it to fact that maybe it was her rebellious teen years leaving her once she started acting like a normal, average, everyday hobbit.
Now, for the past few years, she had been staying with Bilbo in his hobbit hole, saying how she didn't like the comfort of her own home anymore. Her mother being so expecting, so... unpredictable. So many men trying to take notice, which she believed was presser from her mother. It made her sickly, very much so. She had paled and became victim to yearly winter sickness. Though winter was far off and her job as a vet was working wonders.
At the end of each day since she first became a veterinary assistant, she made it a habit to buy peaches, and make a peach cobbler for all her costumers. It was something that instantly became very much liked. Something new and surprising very much accepted. But, for her family, especially Bilbo, she made sure to make each household a weeks worth depending on how many mouths the hobbit holes had to feed.
This day for her was just like any other, taking care of ponies, grooming cats and dogs. The only unpredictable thing that happened was a new, and cute, foal. As beautifully painted as his mother and eyes as doe-eyed as his father. Knocking on her cousins door, she instantly noticed how he peeked out the window before opening the door. In the spur of the moment, she began to sing ''Every move you make, every breath you take...'' once the door was opened only for him to outright pull her inside where she said ''Who's watching you?"
Bilbo pulled a serious face, which is something she was use to and only cracked a smile and a snicker, ''This isn't funny Prim.'' he stated, closing the door and locking it. She rose both her eyebrows, knowing Bilbo meant serious business when he began to actually lock his door while he was still inside his hobbit hole. ''What happened?'' she asked before knocking could be heard.
Soon, throughout the rest of the evening, people began to just show up out of the blue. And not just anyone, DWARVES. Needless to say she shrunk back into her state of invisible and helped her cousin as much as she could, never being noticed, never being bothered, she could just watch and go about without being pulled into her cousins raid party. More then a few times she wished to leave, but after thinking of all the things Bilbo had done for her, it was the least she could do to repay him by keeping his sanity in check.
Soon twelve dwarves and a wizard filled the house and, if the wizard noticed her or not, she couldn't tell, but seeing her cousin going crazy made her want to chuckle, especially after the empty pantry was spied. She would easily help him refill it in the morning, seeing as instead of a payment of coin from her costumers, she took payment of vegetables and various other offerings of food while her boss insisted on paying her with coin.
She stood idly by, watching how everything seemed like a party. Everyone was happy and having fun and a part of her she thought she had lost a long time ago began to emerge, wanting to get to know these dwarves. But the part of her that she had used most of her life held her back, shy and unsure of something new.
All of a sudden, the fun ended as fast as it had started. Knocking with what sounded like a purpose behind it was heard and everyone's faces became serious. Due to how silent everyone had become, and how uncomfortable the air had become, she half expected death himself to be behind that door. As the door was opened, she saw a very tall and handsome dwarf standing there. Instead of hearing trumpets at the funeral, what she heard now was a dead silence.
It was like someone just died, the seriousness. But, she didn't notice for she was more intrigued with his eyes, such beautiful blue eyes, her favourite shade of blue to boot! He was covered in furs and she wondered for a moment if they were all prizes from hunting, but the way he carried himself screamed royalty and she quickly doubted, even though she shouldn't, that he got them himself.
Before she knew it he stood before her, holding her tiny hand in his massive one and giving it a kiss. The shock of she either let her guard down, or he truly was the first to notice her, scared the shit out of her and she passed out, falling flat on the floor behind her.
"Oh, I didn't notice her here.'' Fili stated, as did all the others.
Oh how unpredictable!
