This is more of a series of oneshots all rolled into one. So instead of it being a story(even though long like one), there are large breaks in the timelines between each 'chapter'. I had a dream about it and I could help but write it down... thus the breaks in the timeline.
It was a heartbreaking sight to see. At least... heartbreaking to those who cared about dragon-kind, such as the dragon riders of Berk. True 'dragon riders' were once something of the past, when those like who the residence of Berk once were began to appear and kill the dragons, thus breaking the once solid pact amung dragon kind and the human race, and though it had been a rocky thousands of years, the most unlikely of friends managed to fix it. The five of them, Hiccup, Astrid, Snotlout, and Ruffnut and Tuffnut, had been sent out to a neighboring ally island on account of a young girl(who died shortly after her message was given to them) who had given them knowledge of terrible things going on.
The skinheads, name given because all the men preferred to be bald, had been one of the very first to ally with Berk in hopes of educating everyone on the fact dragons could be best friends, and even though they didn't ride them,(a skinhead preferring to keep their feet planted to the ground) they helped greatly in finding cures for dragons... as well as many other deadly poisons which they would find the cure for.
The girls message had been simple, "They are not saving, but killing."
By the time the five had gotten there, the skinheads were kind, thoughtful, and all around ecstatic the five, most famous of the vikings, graced their presence. But once they began to ask one-to-many questions, they were not as welcome as they once were and quickly told to leave on "sheer accusasions."
Astrid being stubborn, declared that under the orders of Stoick the Vast, they would not leave until they searched the area. Hiccup being kindhearted and having had some of Astrids stubbornness ware off on him since their time together, agreed. Snotlout agreed mainly so he could try to woo the skinhead girls, who only had half their heads shaved and the other half braided around their necks. And Ruff and Tuff, being as troublesome as they had always been, quickly found the team had been looking for when they decided to see if they could sneak some of the fish from one of the baskets a skinhead female carried, heading behind a bar and through a grassy trap door.
Tuffnut thought at first it was sorcery, seeing as the door disappeared when it closed, and his sisters only responce was a smack to the back of the head and a "You idiot, it's a trap door! Do you NOT see the handle?!" She asked and opened it, the two heading inside only to be attacked by the female skinhead.
The skinheads were valued opponents in an all goes battle, they cheated when they could and used everything to their advantage. The sad part was the fact that in every battle, even friendly, they faught to the literal death, battling till the last breath was drawn from either side. Which would explain their constant having kids and adpoting banished men and women.
Upon hearing the commotion, a battle rang out, Stoicks ship, which had been hiding on the other of the island, which the skinheads uninhabited, springing into action once a terrible terror arrived with a message of "OK".
Great bloodshed was made, traitors to their own tribe, skinhead men and women, helped battle against their brothers and sisters, slowly leading the now three(seeing as Ruff and Tuff were still under the tavern) to where the skinhead great and yet terrible deeds transpiered.
Eventually, skinheads of all sizes and ages began to run into the trap door, terrible screams of pain erupting forth from inside. Toothless and the other dragons could wait no longer and, once their riders were on, took to the skies, blasting the tavern enough to finally blast open the floor.
Inside the skinheads were ruthlessly killing all the dragons they had, coming as quite a shock to the vikings of Berk for there had been no missing dragons, all accounted for, so where did these come from? The poor dragons could't fight back, only huddle around the corner of the tavern basement and face their deaths full on, practically skin and bones. Ruffnut and Tuffnut were behind them, trying desperately to kill any of the skinheads who managed to get past to kill what was in the cornor.
As the battle raged on and Stoick and some other vikings arrived to help, it was found that, by the look of the dragons, many were sick and already dying. If anything, their mass slaughter was a blessing for them, for the skinheads would heal them, only to make them sick and weak all over again... and sadly do the same over and over again.
By the time the battle finally ended, the vikings and dragons of Berk had won, true, but not without a sadness that would consume them all. All the dragons had been slaughtered, a nest filled with dragon eggs being what they gave their lives to protect. Though their sacrifice had been all in vein due to not strength and ability of the skinheads, but their sheer numbers, even with the resistance that finally took a step forward and helped the dragon riders in their effort to save the dragons. Come to find, most of the resistance had been adopted and accepted, becoming friends with the dragons much like Hiccup and the others.
Standing in the tavern cellar, which is what they had been doing at the very beginning of this story, faces twisted in pain and sadness... they had failed.
But none felt like more a failure at the moment than Hiccup... that is... till after they began to count and bury the dragons in respect, they found one which made their hearts stop and made a certain dragon feel just as, if not worse, than Hiccup... considering everyone soon felt as bad as Hiccup and the boy worse then that!
It had been a Night Fury, and judging by the eggs slashed and bashed under it's wings it had been female and gave it's final breath to save it's children, but all had been in vein. Toothless nuzzled the night furies face, in an attempt at hoping that, maybe it was alive and was just hanging in there, just enough for them to save her. But after few nudges, even a roar right in her face in hopes of frightening her awake, she made not... one... move.
As heart breaking as it was for everyone(Snotlout actually cried but blamed nonexhistant allergies), no one felt worse at the sight then Hiccup. What might have been his best friends probably ONLY chance at finding a mate and bringing his kind back had been squashed now entirely. But, if there was one female Night Fury, did that mean there may be more out there? Elusivally hiding from viking kind in hopes of keeping their race alive, also believing that they are the last of their kind? Having this hope was squashed by Stoick, saying that even before they began friends with the dragons Night Furies rarly attacked, bringing to light, in their minds, that they were the unholy offpsirng of lightening and death.
But, as everyone began to try and move the dead night fury, a loud BOOM was heard and the wing of the female was ripped open more than it had been, a flaming ball skyrocketing and hitting Hiccup square in the stomach. And seeing as he been right in front of the explosion when it happened, as startled eep and an oomph burst from him as he was slammed onto his ass and skidded right into his buddy, who quickly reacted before his friend and brother could slam into the wall. Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut laughed their asses off at him like they still do every now and again, though Astrid shot them a 'I shall deal with you three later' look and ran to Hiccup's side. The action almost made Toothless jealous... oh what am I kidding? He was jealous, he was so close to being able to may have a mate(may have considering his tail wasn't highly prized, even by other female dragons who knew him well.) And now that it was taken from him so easily, he seethed to know what it felt like to have a female fuss over him every once in awhile.
"By Thor's Beard Hiccup, are you okay?" She all but squeeked, checking his face and everything before he finally got through that he was okay. Everyone had been worried so much for Hiccup(excpet three of them who were still laughing), that it came as a total shock and surprise when a peep was heard.
Everyone looking at Hiccup's lap, the three now finally stopping their fit of giggles, were met with scales white as snow and eyes that should have been green or blue, but instead were pink, but the resemblance of it's species was unmistakeable...
It was a Night Fury.
*****
It had been sixteen years since Hiccup and Astrid had married, and through that time they had more then a few kids. Their oldest looked just like Astrid in face, body and gender, though, she had her fathers flaming hair and green eyes.
The second youngest looked like Hiccup, but had blond hair and blue eyes.
Their names were Hilda and Hiccup Jr.
Coming home after the week long flight to the skinheads island, upon landing the youngest shot out, being only three years, hsi big sister was 'scary' and he was happy mommy and daddy were home... but mostly mommy, being the mama's boy he was.
Dismounting their dragons and removing the saddles and gear, it was found that while gone, Hilda had been hiding herself at the dragon academy again. It worryed the two parents greatly how anti-social their daughter had become.
You see, two years ago, when she and her friends were fourteen, they all had an agreement after their first day of dragon training. A vow of silence till they found the very dragon they connected to. It had been easy at first, but after a week all her friends had broken it out of pranks, tricks, or sheer stupidity before just going about their training with a voice.
Hilda though... she had not spoke a word since the day she took that vow, often times it would bring tears to Astrid's eyes, when she made sure one was around or just with Hiccup. And Mildew only made it worse by being the pompous asshole that he is and blamed it on the, what he believed, nonexhistant devil of the skies.
After he had said that she had been missing for two weeks before finnaly found on a tiny dingy in the middle of the sea, intent on proving him wrong and finding her dragon.
After dragging her back she just... stopped. She never looked anyone in the eyes, she would take her meals to her room. At one point Astrid and Hiccup had a terrible fear that she was harming herself and would one day commit suicide. After awhile that was found to not be the case and every dragon she tried to tame at the dragon academy, she couldn't. She took all the steps, and it followed, all up till the last step, which she would hold out her hand and look away. Instead of touching it's nose to her hand, it would walk away and find someplace else on the island to be.
Over the past few monthes she had been teased and judged, seen as the 'dragonless trainer'. Hiccup had put a stop to it once, though they were sneaky and eventually became bolder again.
The family heading into their home on the hill next to Stoick's home, they were greeted by the smell of beautifully cooked food and their daughter setting the table for all... except herself again, which she would take upstairs. "Hulga, Hulga, Hulga!" Shouted jr, always intent to not speak correctly, no matter how hard his parents tried. "Mommy and daddy are back and bwat whit them a baby dragon!"
At this news, their daughters normally emotionless face raised up to the squigling bundle of white that wanted out of her fathers arms now. She quickly ran over and caught the night fury beore it fell to the ground, amazed at how white it was and almost broke her vow. She set the thing down on the ground, watching as it scurried around the house, sniffing anything and everything that it could. Toothless not far behind it and watching it as it tried to scale the stairs before giving up and giving a small cry of frustration.
Toothless had never seen baby night furies till a week ago, all but one was smashed and killed but that still didn't mean he wasn't gonna stare at it. Eventually finding how whiny it was, 'By Odins good eye I hope I wasn't that cranky to my mother!' He thought to himself, everyone watching while they ate as the little night fury explored, all the way to the fire place where it curled up to sleep.
Hilda, who had yet to go upstairs to eat, quietly walked over to the dragon and sat down, watching it with curiosity.
Little Jr giggled, "Now we know what Tootless looked like as a baby." He said, his mother correcting his pronounciation of Toothless name instantly as Hiccup bust a gut and Toothless glared at his rider.
But everyone looked towards the fireplace when a hoarse, raspy voice began to speak from a long time of unuse, "Hope, her name is Hope." Hilda stated, the tiny dragon nuzzled her hand affectionately and crawling into her lap to sleep.
This was very surprising and caused Astrid to jump up and hug the air out of her daughter, "It's wonderful! Hilda has found her dragon! But sweety, how do you know it's female?" Astrid asked, only to be answered with...
"She told me."
*****
A year had passed and Hope had been growing well. Not as fast as the other dragons, which would explain why the legendary 'Army of Night Furies' had been so far and few in the legends. She was about the size of a full sized labrodor, by now, and was as curious as a kitten.
The first day she found she could climb the stairs inside the house, she did so, often being the one to wake Toothless before he even woke to wake Hiccup for his daily flight. Seeing as she was still small, Toothles would just ignore her and continue sleeping. That is, till she grew old enough to be in that rascel stage and often climbed onto his back, jumped and jogging in place till she finally found where the sensitive part of his ear was and would bite the snot out of it.
More often then not Toothless would be in a foul mood after that and would either bang and actual hole into the roof, or grab Hiccup's good leg and just pull him right out of bed, down the stairs, and out into the cold. All in an attempt to get a few minutes to an hour of peace away from the little annoyance.
Seeing as only a Night Fury can teach another how to fly, she was often left behind and went to find something else to do. Most of the time she spent the day with the female who could speak dragonese and would help her out at the dragon academy. As of late everyone had been trying to get an answer to a question that bothered them... Why was Hope white? Learning about Hope's linage from a skinhead refugee provided that answer.
The only Night Fury found was female and alreayd carrying eggs. They would choose a male from her clutch to impregnant her again and kill him the same as the other dragons, with sickness. Eventually they could't wait months for the dragons to enter heat and ended up having a breeding system which to them, the details of how were none, one the female was too old and gave her last clutch, or used all her eggs desipt her age, she would be killed and a female from her cutch would be chosen to endure the same thing it's mother sadly went through. Before Hope was even hatched they had already been getting albinos, and just killed them to ensure they couldn't breed. Who knows what kind of immune system an albino had!
Basically, the poor thing had been inbreed.
*****
Two years had gone by since they brought the white night fury home. She was still small, being the size of about an Irish Wolfhound. She couldn't be ridden yet, and by now she had calmed considerably.
Toothless interest in the albino had peeked once he realized she stopped pestering him. She had stopped chewing on his ear and had stopped trying to claim his stone bed, instead keeping her place at the foot of Hilda's bed. Seeing as a female Night Fury had never been seen till now, subtile differences could be spotted besides the obvious pink eyes and white hide. Her chest area was more pronounced and her stomach was a lot more skinny, so when it got to her hips it created the illusion that they, like her chest, were more pronounced when they really weren't.
The Residents of Berk were entertained to find that the tide had shifted and the tables had turned, now Hope stalking away from Toothless in a huff as for her, he had now become the annoyence. She was young, not yet knowing the difference between a male and female during certains seasons, and it bothered her when Toothless would coo and warble at her, trying to get her attention every time and chance he could.
But even then, there was always a hope Toothless had in his heart for next year.
*****
Soon enough, the white dragon was soon three years old and would eventually be experiencing her first heat. Toothless was one happy dragoon, but then erked at the same time. This was the time he had tried to avoid for so long... he would have to teach her to fly. And true she would never leave to be wild, having grew up with humans, but his fear was that by the time it was time for the mating fight, she would leave to find another and he, bring cripple, would be left in the dust. True one needed to fly in order to do the proper mating flight, but he didn't wanna loose her her when he had... let's just say attached... to the female.
Hiccup knowing about the flights, attempted many times to teach her, but Toothless was always being a stupid, stubborn reptile, each and every time.
So, sadly for her, she had to go through her first heat without flying, and though she gave Toothless and ear full every time he tried to approach her, at least she didn't mate another.
*****
Finally, four years had passed and she was now a full grown female, true she was a lot smaller than Toothless, but also had the dead Night Fury four years ago.
By now Hope had finally learned how to fly, and not from Toothless, but by her rider Hilda, who studied dragons in flight as a pass time. Much to the dismay of the male dragon.
It was the time where all the dragons sneak off to find and mate with another of their speices, usually doing so in the dead of night so as to be back by morning and not worry their trainers.
This night, though it was suppose to be magical for most dragons, was hell for Toothless. He kept having thoughts of her returning from dragon island with anothers hatchlings because, even with the manual fin Hiccup had placed on him for the time, the one the dragon himself could control, he still felt defective and unattractive to a female.
With those thoughts in his head, he didn't notice the female giving warbles and nudges to get his attention. More then once rolling onto her back in a subbmissive gesture.
Toothless only continued to ignore her, lost in thought before she finally growled and rolled onto her stomach, sitting up on her haunches and began to bat at him like a cat.
It was annoying and Toothless instantly began to bat her back, each getting harder then the last time. Eventually, they were smacking each other like crazy, ramming into one another now and again before he finally pinned her down. "What is wrong with you?!" He screamed into her face. And like the typical female, she didn't say and managed to get him off and they were back to batting.
She eventually huffed, "I don't have time for this." She said and turned, walking away. Thought Toothless blocked her path, "Not until I get my answer! Why did you start outright attacking me?!" He asked, yelling it in her unfazed face, of which she said not a word and gave him the silent treatment, walking swiftly past him like she was the best damn thing ever and take to the air, pissing him off as he followed.
"Ya know, you have the body of an adult but the mindset of a hatchling." He said, only to be attacked by her in the air. Though Toothless being bigger then her by half, he didn't fly off course much and so, she staryted avoiding him. Any normal dragon would have turned tail and found a new intended mate, but seeing as Toothless... actually cared for her and this was very unlike her.
Eventually, he managed to catch her in the air and they both slammed into the ground within the forest of berk, no doubt waking all it's residents due to the nice crator in the ground, and though they were unharmed, Toothless automatic tail was now in ruins.
After seeing it Hope cried and said how sorry she was for what happened to his tail, hiding her face in her forepaws. Knowing that Hiccup had shot down Toothless long before she was born, it should have made her feel better then Toothless nuzzled her, saying it was alright and that Hiccup can make him a new one. But, much like she did when she had been a hatchling, she just continued to cry. Utterly heart broken.
Eventually, after Toothless had draped his wing over her and nuzzled her, they both fell asleep.
*****
Six months later everyone cheered at their dragons return from dragon island with their babies. Everyone was happy... except Hiccup and Hilda. Toothless and Hope had not been on dragon island when they went with a ship to collect them. Making the two fear the worst.
Eventually, Astrid walked up to her husband and daughter, hugging them both. "I am so sorry, sucks to be you two." She stated, trying her hardest not to crack that smile desperately trying to escape when Toothless slowly slinked out of the forest. Hiccup was caught into that trick again but Hilda turned and smiled, running and attempting to takle Toothless with a hug before Hope slowly stepped out from behind some bushes, followed by a series of peeps and cries... by fifteen little night furies.
What happened, was Toothless and Hope were to leave two week before normal dragons leave to lay their eggs. Halfway through flight the babies didn't wanna wait and so, they had made a nest in the very cove Hiccup tamed Toothless in. It was only coincidence that Hiccup didn't visit that spot like he usually did when he felt sad and needed to think.
Had he gone he would have not only his dragon and FIFTEEN HATCHLINGS instead of the normal five to seven. He would have found that Toothless passed out, seeing as no dragon, even a Night fury, ever had fifteen eggs that all hatched healthy and happy.
Needless to say, since the day the little night fury arrived, she lived up to her name and brought them all hope.
